This study looked into the use of physical exercise as a tool for balance and longevity among the elderly people of Mushin Local Government area of Lagos state. The study review provides information on the meaning and benefits of exercise, chronological aging and life expectancy and the variables include the beneficial effects of recreation, relaxation, rest and sleep, physical activity, diet and medical check-up.
Three hundred elderly people were selected in different four divisions within the Mushin Community.
The descriptive survey research was used for the study and a self- structured questionnaire was the main tool. The section A of the questionnaire collects demographic data of respondents and section B collects data for hypotheses testing. The demographic data were analyzed with frequency count and percentage while inferential statistics of chi-square(x²) was used to analyzed the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha levels.
The findings shows that physical inactivity, lack of recreation, and poor diet does not support the use of physical exercise as a tool for balance and longevity among the elderly people of Mushin Local Government area of Lagos state.
Hence, the study suggested that involvement in regular exercise along with recreation, good diet, visiting the Gym, regular or timely payment of pensions by employers of labour and in addition to medical care, home care rendered by social worker, children and families of these elderly one will promote better living, and will also ensure longevity as well as reduction in morbidity among the elderly people of Mushin Local Government area of Lagos- state.
